Annie Leibovitz!
About Annie:
Anna-Lou Leibovitz is her real name, but she goes by "Annie." She was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1949 and is now 64 years old. She attended San Francisco Art Institute where she developed her love for photography. She specializes in portrait photography and was able to work for both the Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair magazines. Working for those magazines is the main reason why her photos are of famous actors and celebrities.
I chose this artist because since she specializes in portrait photography I figured she would have many images that I could choose from. I liked how her images are always of celebrities doing unusual things. For example, she took a picture of Whoopi Goldberg sitting in a bathtub full of milk.
I wanted to emulate Annie by using the same background, lighting, and subject matter to get it to look as close as possible.

This photo was taken by Annie Leibovitz of Meryl Streep. It has highlights, such as the white face and white shirt, and it has shadows, such as the bottom of her hair and the dark green background. The image seems perfectly exposed and focused. I think the photographer used a fast shutter speed because Meryl's hair looks like it was being fanned back, and the photographer was able to freeze the action.
The image was captured straight on and follows the rule of thirds. The subject of the image is also very evident as there are no distractions. I think that the way her fingers are positioned lead the viewer's eye in and then out of the image from left to right. I think the photo is creative, interesting, and unusual all at the same time. The mood is kind of mysterious and different. The most successful part about this photo is the balance between light and dark colors. |
My emulation captures the main points of the real photo. The backgrounds are similar(except for the lighter part) as well as the shirt, face color, and the position of the hands. The hair is not exactly the same color and is not flowing back the same way.
The lighting that came in from the window into the picture was perfect and just happened at the right time. The point of view was also straight on like the real one. If I were to redo the image I would try to get the face mask to look better and the pulling of the right cheek to look more similar. |
